Itinerary

Citadel is one of the most prestigious military castles constructed in the Middle Ages whose location is strategic since it controls the cities of Cairo and Al Fustat that's why the citadel provides defensive importance. The Citadel was erected during the 12th century to defend Cairo against the Crusaders and it was used as the seat of the government during the ruling periods of Ayyubids, Mamluk, and Ottomans. Mohamed Ali Mosque Mohamed Ali Mosque proudly stands as the highest point inside Cairo Citadel which was established by Mohammed Ali Pasha in 1830 AD and its erection continued till his death in 1848 AD. The exterior design was taken from the design of the Sultan Ahmad Mosque in Istanbul and the mosque acts as one of the most significant Islamic attractions in Cairo.

Sultan Hassan Madrassa and Mosque acts as one of the rarest pieces of the early Mamluk architecture period which were founded between 1356 AD and 1363 AD. The mosque was built out of giant blocks of stone which became the symbol of the culmination of all the architectural projects during the reign of the Mamluks. Al Rifa'i Mosque Another impressive Islamic monument in Cairo is the Al Refaie Mosque which was founded by Khoshiar Hanim, the mother of Khedive Ismail. The process of construction had begun in 1869 AD and was completed by 1911 AD. However, the works of its erection stopped for around 25 years from 1880 to 1905 AD. The mosque served as the burial tombs of Mohamed Ali's family members.

Ibn Tulun Mosque Ibn Tulun Mosque is the oldest and largest mosque in Cairo which was established between 876 and 879 AD by Ahmed Ibn Tulun who was commissioned by the Abbasid Caliph to be the governor of Al Fustat. The interior design of the mosque was derived from the Abbasid architectural style and the mosque stands wonderfully decorated arches with a very large courtyard.
